Sri Lanka beat higher-ranked Turkmenistan in Asia Cup qualifier

Sri Lanka pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Turkmenistan in the first leg of the AFC Asia Cup 2027 qualifier held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo on Thursday.

Ranked 197th in the FIFA World Rankings, Sri Lanka overcame the 138th-ranked Turkmenistan side in front of an energetic home crowd to gain a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg.

The second leg of the tie will take place on October 14 in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where Sri Lanka will look to defend their lead and continue their dream run toward the 2027 AFC Asia Cup.
