Government-Backed Jaffna International Cricket Stadium Project Moves Forward on Schedule

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) confirmed on Monday (29) that construction of the Jaffna International Cricket Stadium (JICS) in Mandaitivu, Jaffna, is progressing steadily and in line with planned timelines, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to developing world-class sports infrastructure in the Northern Province.

In a media release, SLC stated that construction work at the venue had been temporarily suspended due to the impact of the Ditwah Cyclone, which disrupted the scheduled work programme, including a trial match originally planned for 14 January 2026.

“Construction activities have now resumed, and the trial game will be conducted after the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India. Sri Lanka Cricket remains confident that the stadium will be completed within the stipulated timeframe,” the statement said.

The international-standard cricket ground is being developed across 48 acres, featuring 10 centre wickets and boundary dimensions extending up to 80 metres, meeting global playing standards.

The stadium project forms a key component of Sri Lanka Cricket’s broader Sports City development plan for Jaffna, which spans a total area of 138 acres. This landmark initiative is expected to play a significant role in strengthening cricket development in the Northern Province, while aligning with the Government-supported National Pathway Programme aimed at nurturing future talent across the island.

The Jaffna International Cricket Stadium stands as a symbol of inclusive development, regional empowerment, and Sri Lanka’s continued investment in national sports growth.
