Defending Masters champion Rory McIlroy is still expected to compete in the upcoming PGA Championship despite suffering an uncomfortable toe injury that forced him to abandon a practice round after only three holes on Tuesday.
The Northern Irishman, who arrives at Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia aiming to secure back-to-back major victories, experienced discomfort in his right foot just hours after revealing he had removed the nail from his little toe earlier in the week.
Speaking candidly with reporters before the tournament, McIlroy even joked about the unusual injury situation while explaining how the issue occurred.
“Softened it up in the shower and just ripped it off,” he laughed, reportedly removing his sock afterward to show journalists the aftermath of the self-treatment.
McIlroy had initially planned to complete nine holes of practice on Tuesday afternoon after already making an earlier reconnaissance visit to the Donald Ross-designed course in Pennsylvania. However, concerns quickly emerged when the 37-year-old appeared to struggle physically during the session.
According to reports from Golf Digest, McIlroy was seen limping by the third hole and at one stage removed his golf shoe while attempting to manage the pain. He ultimately decided to discontinue the practice round on the fourth tee before leaving the course in a golf cart.
Despite the setback, witnesses indicated McIlroy remained in relatively positive spirits, and there is currently no suggestion that the injury will prevent him from teeing off when the championship begins on Thursday.
Nevertheless, the incident represents an unwelcome disruption ahead of one of the most significant tournaments of the season, particularly given the strong form and confidence McIlroy has carried since successfully defending his Masters title last month.
The four-time major champion appeared notably more relaxed and composed during his pre-tournament media duties compared to the tense and emotionally drained figure seen during last year’s PGA Championship campaign.
Much of that renewed calm appears rooted in the fulfillment he achieved after completing another memorable triumph at Augusta National Golf Club in 2025. McIlroy’s dramatic playoff victory against Justin Rose further strengthened his legacy and reinforced his standing among golf’s modern greats.
Reflecting on the significance of major championship victories, McIlroy acknowledged that his perspective on success has evolved as his career progresses.
“Major championship wins don’t come along that often,” he told BBC Sport. “A little more often for me in the past couple years than the previous decade, so yeah, I wanted to enjoy it.”
“The further I get on in my career, the more I start to realise how special these moments are,” he added. “It was really nice to spend time at home with Erica and Poppy and my parents.”
Now, attention turns to whether McIlroy can once again overcome adversity and mount another major challenge despite the latest physical concern. With momentum, experience, and confidence on his side, the golfing world will be watching closely to see if the Masters champion can add yet another defining chapter to his illustrious career.
