The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has officially approved a new Selection Committee for Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), following a request submitted by Sri Lanka Cricket on May 20, 2026.
The approval was granted by Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, under the provisions of Section 39 (1) of the Sports Law No. 25 of 1973 and the Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2437/24 dated May 21, 2025. The appointment formalises a new five-member panel to oversee national team selections.
The newly appointed committee will be chaired by Kapila Wijegunawardena, who takes over leadership of the selection structure at a time of heightened scrutiny over governance and decision-making in Sri Lankan cricket.
Other members of the panel include former wicketkeeper Amal Silva and former cricketer Brendon Kuruppu, both of whom bring prior international and domestic experience to the role.
The committee is further strengthened by Waruna Waragoda and Vanessa De Silva, who complete the five-member structure tasked with managing future national team selections.
The Ministry stated that these appointments are expected to improve transparency and efficiency in the selection process, addressing ongoing concerns about consistency and administrative oversight within Sri Lanka Cricket.
The decision comes amid wider debate over cricket governance in the country, with stakeholders repeatedly calling for clearer procedures and reduced external interference in sporting administration.
With the new committee now in place, attention will shift to how quickly it can stabilise selection operations ahead of Sri Lanka’s upcoming international commitments.
