Japan’s veteran left-back Yuto Nagatomo is preparing for a record-breaking fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, continuing a remarkable international career defined by longevity, passion, and leadership.
At 39 years old, Nagatomo remains an influential figure in the national setup, even as Japan prepares for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While his pace may no longer match his peak years, his energy, experience, and leadership continue to make him a vital presence in the squad.
Nagatomo, who has earned 144 international caps, is widely regarded as the emotional engine of the team. He often leads training sessions with intensity, motivates younger players, and shares the experience gained from more than a decade at the highest level.
Describing his role in his own unique way, Nagatomo said he possesses a “World Cup nose,” claiming he can sense the mood of the team and help lift spirits when needed.
“If I sense that there’s a stale atmosphere, I can cleanse the air,” he said, describing himself as an “air purifier” within the squad environment.
The defender first appeared on the world stage at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where Japan reached the Round of 16. His performances later earned him a move to Inter Milan, where he enjoyed a successful spell in European football.
He went on to play for clubs including Galatasaray and Olympique de Marseille before returning to Japan with FC Tokyo in 2021.
Nagatomo made history at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by becoming Japan’s first outfield player to feature in four editions of the tournament. That campaign included memorable wins over Germany and Spain before Japan were eliminated on penalties by Croatia in the Round of 16.
Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu praised Nagatomo’s experience and leadership, highlighting his ability to guide younger players through the pressures of world football.
“He knows all about the successes and shortcomings of previous tournaments,” Moriyasu said, adding that Nagatomo’s communication and mentality can help stabilise the team in high-pressure moments.
Although he has made only limited appearances since the last World Cup due to injury setbacks, Nagatomo has remained a consistent presence in domestic football and continues to meet the required standards for international competition, according to the coaching staff.
His selection for a fifth World Cup marks an Asian record, surpassing legendary players such as Hong Myung-bo and Sami al-Jaber.
Emotionally reflecting on his achievement, Nagatomo broke down in tears after being named in the squad, acknowledging the significance of his journey from 2010 to the present.
Now entering what could be his final World Cup, Nagatomo says he is determined to give everything for Japan’s ultimate goal.
“I want to give everything I’ve learned back to the team so we can win the title,” he said, adding that his passion this time is even stronger than before.
With experience, leadership, and unmatched enthusiasm, Nagatomo remains one of Japan’s most influential figures as they chase World Cup glory.
