Nissanka’s Century Stuns Australia as Sri Lanka Storm into Super Eights

PALLEKELE – Pathum Nissanka produced a masterclass in power-hitting to guide Sri Lanka to a dominant 8-wicket victory over Australia at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The win officially secures Sri Lanka’s spot in the Super Eight stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup, while leaving the Australians on the brink of a shock early exit.

The Turnaround
Australia appeared to be cruising toward a mammoth total after a blistering start by openers Travis Head (56) and the returning captain Mitchell Marsh (54). The duo dismantled the Lankan attack early on, racing to 104/0 in just 8 overs.

However, the “Pallekele Spin Trap” snapped shut in the middle overs. Led by leg-spinner Dushan Hemantha (3/37), Sri Lanka’s bowlers staged a remarkable comeback, triggering a collapse that saw Australia lose their last six wickets for just 21 runs. Australia was eventually bowled out for 181 in exactly 20 overs.

Nissanka’s Masterclass
The chase was defined by one man: Pathum Nissanka. Despite losing Kusal Perera early, Nissanka remained relentless. He reached a magnificent unbeaten century off just 51 balls, punctuating his innings with a flurry of sixes against Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Ellis.

Ably supported by Pavan Rathnayake, who provided a quick-fire cameo, Nissanka steered the co-hosts to the target with 14 balls to spare.
