Saunders SC solidified their position at the top of Group A following a commanding 3-0 victory over Java Lane SC, one of the group’s toughest contenders, last weekend. Having played five matches, Saunders remains undefeated with four wins and one draw.
The battle for the top spot was neck-and-neck with New Star SC until January 9th. However, a decisive 1-0 victory for Saunders in their head-to-head clash ended New Star’s unbeaten run, leaving Saunders as the sole undefeated team in Group A.
Group B: Pelicans SC Outpacing Rivals
In Group B, Pelicans SC sits comfortably at the summit. Out of their five matches played so far, they have secured three wins and two draws, maintaining a clean record without a single defeat.
Contrast in Government Teams: Police vs. SLTB
The tournament features two prominent state-affiliated teams: Sri Lanka Police SC and the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) SC.
Police SC is currently performing well, holding the third position in Group B.
SLTB SC, however, has become the tournament’s biggest disappointment. After six matches, they sit at the bottom of the table, having conceded a staggering 30 goals while scoring only once.
A Call for Revival: Saving SLTB Football
The dismal performance of the SLTB team—a club that once produced national players and captains—is a cause for concern. Rather than considering the dissolution of the team due to these heavy defeats, authorities must focus on a strategic revival.
With disciplined training, proper guidance, and commitment, SLTB can return to its former glory. A practical suggestion for the management would be to secure corporate sponsorships. In exchange, SLTB could offer advertising space on their long-distance buses, generating the necessary funds to provide better facilities and incentives for the players.
