The Sri Lanka national cricket team has made a major humanitarian pledge, announcing that they will donate the tour money and match fees earned from their ongoing series in Pakistan to provide crucial assistance for those impacted by devastating floods and landslides across the country.
The team’s decision was announced by Head Coach Sanath Jayasuriya in a statement released on behalf of all the players and support staff. Jayasuriya explained that the team was deeply saddened by the situation faced by their fellow Sri Lankans and shared heartfelt concern for the families impacted by the disaster.
Disaster Context
The extreme weather is linked to Cyclone Ditwah, which sources indicate was intensifying and moving toward the north and northwest. The relentless rainfall and powerful winds have resulted in significant devastation, prompting authorities to issue nationwide weather warnings.
As of Friday morning, at least 56 people had died in Sri Lanka. The impact extends widely, with more than 12,000 families, which translates to roughly 43,000 individuals, having been directly affected.
Looking Ahead
The team made the pledge while they are currently participating in a tri-series tournament in Pakistan. Head Coach Jayasuriya noted that while this donation is a first step, the team plans to “do more” and will continue with further support efforts once they return home.
In addition to the financial commitment, Jayasuriya issued a public appeal, urging citizens to stay safe, adhere to official guidelines, and care for one another during this challenging time, thereby reaffirming the team’s solidarity with all Sri Lankans.
