Sri Lanka Football made history by playing 18 international games in 24 month

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) organized a special press conference to share the progress of its remarkable two-year football journey and to announce the upcoming events lined up on Sri Lanka’s football calendar.

One of the key highlights of the event was the Official Draw of the Champions League 2025/26, which concluded successfully at Football House. The draw featured the participation of 14 top clubs, divided into two groups, setting the stage for one of the most competitive seasons yet. The Champions League is scheduled to kick off on 7th November 2025.

During the press conference, FFSL President Jaswar Umar together with the administration also discussed Sri Lanka’s football-packed calendar, which includes domestic competitions, international tournaments, youth development programs, and grassroots initiatives aimed at strengthening the game at all levels.

President Umar emphasized FFSL’s commitment to driving football forward, stating that the past two years have been a period of transformation, with a focus on professionalism, infrastructure, and opportunities for players across the country.

The upcoming months are expected to be a thrilling period for Sri Lankan football, with fans eagerly anticipating both the Champions League and other international engagements.

After a lapse of almost four years, Football Sri Lanka (FSL) finally got their act together to resume domestic football, which came in for heavy criticism. Incumbent President Jaswar Umar and his team of officials were delighted to announce the resumption of local Football at a press briefing held last Wednesday at the Football headquarters.

“We are extremely delighted to announce the resumption of domestic football which was delayed due to various reasons. We finally put our act together to kick-off the Champions League initially which has more teams than the Super League Tournament,” said Jaswar.

Defending champions Matara City Club and runner-up Java Lane SC are slated on top of Group B and A respectively, while twelve more iconic teams in the game will vie for honours in this year’s tournament, where the majority of the games will be at Racecourse Stadium, while City Football League and Public Grounds Kurunegala will be the other two venues which are to host some of the games.
