The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially began in spectacular style on Thursday night at the historic Estadio Azteca, as the global football community witnessed the opening of the first-ever 48-team tournament, jointly hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
The iconic stadium, which previously hosted the World Cup finals in 1970 and 1986, was once again transformed into the centre of world football, welcoming around 80,000 spectators for a ceremony that blended sport, culture, and entertainment on an unprecedented scale.
A Historic Opening to a Historic Tournament
This edition of the FIFA World Cup marks a major expansion in the competition’s history, growing from 32 to 48 teams, with matches spread across three countries and 16 host cities. A total of 104 matches will be played over 39 days, culminating in the final scheduled for 19 July at MetLife Stadium near New York City.
The opening ceremony at Estadio Azteca was designed to reflect the scale and global unity of the tournament, combining Latin American cultural heritage with modern global entertainment.
Shakira and Burna Boy Steal the Spotlight
The most anticipated moment of the night came when global superstar Shakira and Nigerian artist Burna Boy took centre stage to perform the official tournament anthem, “Dai Dai.”
Their performance electrified the stadium, with fans singing and dancing as fireworks illuminated the night sky. The collaboration between two globally recognised artists symbolised the World Cup’s theme of unity through sport and music.
The performance quickly became one of the defining highlights of the opening ceremony, trending across social media platforms worldwide within minutes.
Star-Studded Musical Line-Up
Alongside the headline act, the ceremony featured a strong line-up of international and Latin American performers. Renowned Mexican band Maná, global superstar J Balvin, singer Belinda, and legendary artist Alejandro Fernández all contributed to a rich musical showcase.
The performances combined modern pop, regional Latin rhythms, and traditional cultural elements, reflecting the diversity and identity of the host nation.
Cultural Showcase and Aztec-Inspired Visuals
The ceremony opened with a dramatic cultural presentation inspired by ancient Aztec heritage, paying tribute to Mexico’s deep historical roots. Dancers, visual projections, and elaborate stage designs transformed the stadium into a celebration of Mexico’s identity.
Mass choreography sequences, combined with large-scale fireworks and LED displays, created a visually immersive experience that symbolised the connection between tradition and modern global sport.
Opening Match and Security Concerns Outside Stadium
Following the ceremony, attention turned to the opening match between hosts Mexico and South Africa.
While celebrations inside Estadio Azteca were festive, reports indicated chaotic scenes outside the stadium and in central Mexico City, where large crowds gathered at fan zones. Some areas experienced overcrowding and limited access due to security barriers and high demand.
Authorities urged fans to move to alternative viewing locations as official fan zones reached capacity shortly before kickoff.

The 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup is set to be the largest in history, featuring:
- 48 participating teams
- 104 total matches
