EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — Kylian Mbappé continued his extraordinary ascent into footballing immortality on Tuesday, rewriting the FIFA World Cup record books with another scintillating performance as France swept aside Sweden 3-0 to book their place in the Round of 16.
The Real Madrid superstar struck twice at MetLife Stadium to become the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup knockout history, surpassing Brazilian legends Leônidas and Ronaldo Nazário. His latest brace also moved him to within one goal of Lionel Messi’s all-time World Cup scoring record, further strengthening his case as the defining player of his generation.
France’s emphatic victory—its biggest in a World Cup knockout match since defeating Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 final—sets up a mouthwatering Round of 16 encounter against surprise package Paraguay, who stunned Germany to reach the knockout phase.
Mbappé Delivers on the Biggest Stage
With the match finely poised approaching halftime, Mbappé produced a moment of individual brilliance befitting his reputation.
Receiving possession near the byline, the French captain beat Swedish defender Viktor Gyökeres with a dazzling crossover move before curling an unstoppable finish inside the far post in the 45th minute, giving France the breakthrough they richly deserved after dominating proceedings.
The goal marked Mbappé’s ninth strike in World Cup knockout football, establishing a new tournament record and highlighting his remarkable ability to perform when the stakes are at their highest.
His celebration carried added emotion as he sprinted directly towards head coach Didier Deschamps, who had returned to the touchline after missing France’s final group-stage fixture following the passing of his mother.
“He knows he will never be alone. We are all here to support him,” Mbappé said after the match.
France Turn on the Style
France doubled their advantage shortly after the restart through Bradley Barcola following another flowing attacking move orchestrated by Michael Olise.
Olise, one of France’s standout performers throughout the tournament, produced a perfectly timed through ball that allowed Barcola to calmly slot beyond Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström.
Mbappé then completed another memorable afternoon in the 74th minute.
After an elegant backheel initiated the attack, Olise delivered another inch-perfect pass into the penalty area, where Mbappé controlled with composure before firing clinically into the far corner to register his second goal of the afternoon and sixth of the tournament.
The brace drew him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot while taking his World Cup tally to 18 goals in just 18 appearances, leaving him only one behind Messi’s all-time record despite having played 11 fewer World Cup matches.
France’s Attack Continues to Flourish
France produced one of their most dominant displays of the tournament, overwhelming Sweden from the opening whistle despite challenging weather conditions.
Playing in temperatures exceeding 32°C (90°F) under intense humidity at the venue scheduled to host the World Cup Final on 19 July, Didier Deschamps’ side outshot Sweden 25-7, including an overwhelming 15-3 advantage during the opening half.
Mbappé had already struck the post before opening the scoring, while Olise nearly produced one of the goals of the tournament with an audacious bicycle kick that also rattled the woodwork.
Olise’s outstanding display yielded two assists, increasing his tournament total to five—the highest by any player at a men’s FIFA World Cup since Germany’s Thomas Hässler recorded the same number in 1994.
Eyes on Another World Cup Final
Seeking to reach a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final, France will now face Paraguay on 4 July in Philadelphia.
Victory would send Les Bleus into a quarter-final against either Canada or Morocco in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Despite his record-breaking exploits, Mbappé remained focused on the team’s collective ambition.
“I know who I am and what I have to do, but this is not about me. The entire team understands what is required. We played well, although we could have been better in the opening stages,” he said.
France head coach Didier Deschamps echoed that sentiment after watching his side produce another championship-calibre performance.
“We’re on a mission—and I’m on that mission with them,” the veteran coach said.
For Sweden, whose remarkable journey ended against one of the tournament favourites, defender Victor Lindelöf acknowledged the gulf in quality.
“We lost against one of the best teams in the world. Considering where we were not long ago, simply reaching the World Cup has been an achievement,” he reflected.
As France’s campaign gathers momentum, Mbappé continues to redefine greatness with every appearance. At just 27, the French superstar is not only breaking records—he is rapidly building a World Cup legacy that could ultimately eclipse every player who has come before him.
