Sri Lanka’s cricket administration has entered a decisive phase of transition following a major intervention by the government, as the Minister of Sports formally accepted the resignation of the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket, including its president, Shammi Silva.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports confirmed that, with immediate effect, all administrative, operational, and regulatory functions of the national cricket body have been brought under direct ministerial oversight. This unprecedented move signals a firm attempt by authorities to stabilize governance and restore public confidence in the country’s most influential sporting institution.
The Ministry emphasized that the decision was enacted in accordance with the legal provisions outlined in Sections 31 and 34 of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973, which grant the government powers to intervene in sports bodies under exceptional circumstances. These sections are typically invoked when administrative irregularities, governance breakdowns, or systemic inefficiencies threaten the integrity and proper functioning of a sporting organization.
Sources within the Ministry indicate that the resignations come amid mounting scrutiny over administrative practices, financial transparency, and overall performance management within Sri Lanka Cricket. While specific details have not been publicly disclosed, the sweeping nature of the decision reflects the urgency with which reforms are being pursued.
Looking ahead, the Ministry has assured stakeholders that a new interim committee will be appointed in the coming days. This committee is expected to focus on comprehensive structural reforms, including strengthening governance frameworks, enhancing accountability mechanisms, and ensuring alignment with international cricketing standards set by the International Cricket Council.
The transition period is likely to be closely monitored by both local and international observers, particularly given the significance of Sri Lanka’s cricketing legacy and its role on the global stage. Maintaining operational continuity—especially with ongoing international commitments—will be a key priority for the interim administration.
This development marks a critical juncture for Sri Lankan cricket, presenting both challenges and opportunities. While the immediate disruption raises questions about short-term stability, the government’s intervention also opens the door for long-overdue reforms aimed at revitalizing the sport’s governance and competitive future.
As the situation evolves, players, fans, and stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how effectively the new leadership can navigate this period of change and steer Sri Lanka Cricket toward a more transparent, accountable, and successful era.
