ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Over Governance Breaches Amid Corruption Investigation

BY SANDHYA DISSANAYAKE, ATTORNEY-AT-LAW

The International Cricket Council has suspended Cricket Canada with immediate effect following serious breaches of its membership obligations, adding further turmoil to the administration of cricket in the country.

The decision was announced after an ICC Board meeting held in Ahmedabad, India, and comes just weeks after the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit reportedly launched an investigation into allegations involving Cricket Canada officials and players.

Despite the suspension, the Canadian national teams will remain eligible to participate in ICC-sanctioned international competitions. The ICC confirmed that operational funding required for national team activities will continue to be provided through a controlled mechanism to ensure players are not adversely affected.

The suspension follows allegations raised in a documentary broadcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in April. The programme reportedly highlighted concerns surrounding corruption within Cricket Canada, including claims of governance irregularities, match manipulation, and threats of violence involving several officials and players.

Media reports indicated that the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit launched an investigation shortly after the documentary aired, prompting increased scrutiny of the organisation’s governance structure.

In an official statement, the ICC said Cricket Canada had been suspended due to “serious breaches” of its membership obligations and would be required to satisfy a number of conditions before its membership could be restored.

The governing body noted that Cricket Canada must undertake significant governance and administrative reforms as part of the reinstatement process.

The ICC further stated that progress on these reforms will be monitored by an ICC-appointed Normalisation Committee, supported by ICC management. Full membership will only be restored once the ICC Board is satisfied that all required conditions have been successfully implemented.

The latest action reflects the ICC’s increasing focus on governance standards among its member nations, particularly in emerging cricket markets where administrative challenges have become a growing concern.

Cricket Canada now joins USA Cricket, which was suspended by the ICC in 2025 over similar membership compliance issues. Despite that suspension, USA Cricket’s national teams have continued participating in international tournaments and remain on course to compete at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where cricket will make its Olympic return.

For Cricket Canada, the suspension represents a significant setback at a time when the sport has been experiencing rapid growth across North America. The organisation will now face the challenge of implementing structural reforms while maintaining the development and competitiveness of its national teams.
