The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Transformation Committee has revealed significant progress in its efforts to modernize the administration of the sport, outlining a series of proposed constitutional and governance reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, accountability, and long-term development.
Addressing the media during its monthly briefing, the committee provided an update on the ongoing transformation process, highlighting key initiatives including the drafting of a new constitution, the introduction of mandatory female representation in leadership structures, and strategies to strengthen grassroots and women’s cricket across the country.
New Constitution Nearing Completion
A central focus of the committee’s work has been the development of a comprehensive new constitution for Sri Lanka Cricket. Committee members confirmed that the drafting process has reached an advanced stage in consultation with legal experts from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The proposed constitutional framework is expected to introduce a range of governance reforms, including the appointment of independent directors, enhanced accountability mechanisms, and stricter eligibility criteria for individuals seeking leadership positions within Sri Lanka Cricket.
The reforms are designed to align the administration of Sri Lankan cricket with modern international governance standards while ensuring greater transparency and professionalism in decision-making processes.
Stronger Focus on Women’s Cricket and Grassroots Development
The committee also reaffirmed its commitment to expanding opportunities for women and young cricketers throughout the country.
Chairman Eran Wickramaratne, together with committee members including former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara and other cricketing stakeholders, emphasized the importance of investing in women’s cricket and strengthening school-level coaching programmes as part of a long-term development strategy.
Officials noted that sustainable success at the elite level can only be achieved through a robust grassroots structure that identifies, nurtures, and develops talent from a young age.
The committee further highlighted plans to increase female participation in cricket administration and leadership, ensuring greater diversity and representation within the sport’s governing framework.
Legal Review and Parliamentary Approval
The next phase of the reform process will see the draft constitution submitted to the Legal Draftsman’s Department and the Attorney General’s Department for review and refinement.
Following the completion of the legal vetting process, the proposed constitution is expected to be presented to Parliament before being formally adopted.
The Transformation Committee believes these reforms will lay the foundation for a more transparent, accountable, and sustainable future for Sri Lanka Cricket while supporting the continued growth of the game at every level.
As the reform process gathers momentum, stakeholders across the cricketing landscape will be closely monitoring developments that could shape the future governance and direction of one of Sri Lanka’s most important sporting institutions.
