COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka’s sporting landscape is set for a transformative moment on 9 August, when the MAIN Championship stages the country’s first-ever international Muay Thai Fight Night, an ambitious event that promises to redefine combat sports in the island nation while positioning Sri Lanka on the global fight map.
Hosted at the iconic Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), the inaugural championship represents far more than a night of elite competition. It is the launch of a long-term vision to establish Sri Lanka as a regional hub for international combat sports, creating sustainable opportunities for athletes, attracting global sporting events, and expanding the country’s growing sports economy.
For decades, Sri Lanka has produced talented martial artists who have excelled despite limited professional platforms. The MAIN Championship seeks to bridge that gap by delivering an internationally sanctioned promotion capable of showcasing Sri Lankan talent alongside accomplished overseas competitors under world-class conditions.
More than 1,000 invited guests, including over 150 VIPs, are expected to attend what is anticipated to become one of the most prestigious combat sports events ever staged in the country.
The fight card will feature 11 professionally sanctioned Muay Thai contests, bringing together leading Sri Lankan fighters and international athletes in a showcase designed to meet the production standards of major global promotions. Premium lighting, immersive visual effects, broadcast-quality presentation, and live entertainment will complement the action inside the ring, offering spectators an experience rarely seen in Sri Lankan sport.
Yet, beyond the spectacle, the event carries a far more significant purpose.
Building a Sustainable Future for Sri Lankan Combat Sports
MAIN Championship has been established with an ambitious objective—to transform Sri Lanka from an emerging participant in combat sports into a recognised destination capable of hosting internationally acclaimed events while producing athletes who can compete successfully on the world stage.
Rather than focusing solely on entertainment, the organisation has adopted a development-driven model that prioritises athlete progression, industry growth, and long-term sustainability.
By creating regular opportunities for elite competition, the promotion aims to provide Sri Lankan fighters with invaluable international exposure without requiring them to leave the country to pursue professional opportunities.
Equally important is the wider economic ecosystem the championship seeks to stimulate. From event management, broadcasting, media production and sports marketing to sponsorship activation, hospitality and tourism, the initiative is expected to generate new employment opportunities while contributing to the continued professionalisation of Sri Lanka’s sports industry.

A defining feature of the championship is its commitment to athlete development across multiple levels.
Competition will be held in both Senior Elite and Junior Elite divisions, ensuring emerging fighters gain meaningful experience within an international competition environment while competing alongside established professionals.
Senior contests will be fought over three three-minute rounds, while junior athletes will compete in three two-minute rounds, creating a structured pathway that mirrors international competition standards.
The philosophy reflects a broader commitment to nurturing the next generation of Sri Lankan combat athletes by providing them with competitive opportunities, technical development, and exposure from an early stage in their careers.
Federation Support Reinforces International Credibility
The championship has received the official sanction of the Sri Lanka Muay Thai Federation (SLMTF), the sport’s recognised national governing body.
Its endorsement ensures the competition will be conducted in accordance with internationally accepted technical regulations, officiating standards, and athlete welfare protocols.
For the Federation, the event represents a landmark opportunity to accelerate the growth of Muay Thai nationally while strengthening Sri Lanka’s profile within the international combat sports community.
Vision Beyond the Inaugural Event
Speaking about the organisation’s long-term ambitions, MAIN Championship Founder Lankeshtha Rupasinghe said the inaugural event is only the beginning of a much larger journey.

Plans are already underway to take the MAIN Championship brand overseas, creating international platforms for Sri Lankan fighters while establishing the promotion among Asia’s emerging combat sports organisations.
