Sri Lanka’s Javelin Star Rumesh Tharanga Honoured in Doha Ahead of Diamond League Appearance

Sri Lanka’s rising athletics sensation Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage was honoured at a special felicitation ceremony hosted by Sri Lankan Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Sithara Khan, at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha on June 18, ahead of his participation in the prestigious Wanda Diamond League meeting at the Qatar Sports Club.

The ceremony celebrated Rumesh’s remarkable achievements on the international stage and his growing stature as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers.

Rumesh arrived in Doha fresh from a sensational victory at the Ostrava Golden Spike Meet in the Czech Republic, where he claimed first place in the men’s javelin event with a personal best throw of 86.57 metres. The outstanding performance propelled him to World No. 2 in the men’s javelin rankings, marking a historic milestone for Sri Lankan athletics.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sithara Khan congratulated Rumesh on his exceptional achievements and extended her best wishes ahead of his Diamond League appearance. She praised the athlete’s commitment, discipline and determination, while highlighting his ambitious goal of securing an Olympic medal for Sri Lanka at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Speaking at the event, Rumesh expressed his excitement about competing against some of the world’s finest athletes and viewed the Diamond League competition as a valuable opportunity to test himself against the sport’s elite.

The Sri Lankan star also conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to his family, coaches, supporters and well-wishers for their unwavering encouragement throughout his journey.

He acknowledged that their continued support has been instrumental in his development as an athlete and has motivated him to keep striving towards his ultimate dream of achieving Olympic success for Sri Lanka.

The event was attended by Rumesh’s father, Thushara Premakeerthi Pathirage, his coach Tony Prasanna, and physiotherapist Chandima Sarathchandra Gurusinghe. Representatives from the Sri Lanka Coordinating Committee, led by its President Duleep Liyanage, along with members of the Sri Lanka Benevolent Fund, the Sri Lanka Business and Professional Council, and staff of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha, were also present.

The gathering reflected the immense pride and support of the Sri Lankan community in Qatar as they rallied behind one of the nation’s brightest sporting talents.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Doha joined the wider Sri Lankan community in wishing Rumesh every success in the Wanda Diamond League and in his continued pursuit of Olympic glory, as the nation looks forward to seeing its javelin star scale even greater heights on the global stage.
