Novak Djokovic once again showcased his trademark resilience and championship mentality after battling back from a set down to defeat French rising star Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a gripping first-round clash at the French Open on Sunday. The Serbian legend secured a hard-fought 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4 victory to advance into the second round at Roland Garros and continue his pursuit of a historic 25th Grand Slam title.

The match began with huge intensity as the Paris crowd rallied behind home favourite Mpetshi Perricard, who immediately troubled Djokovic with his explosive power and massive serve. Standing at 2.01 metres tall, the young Frenchman consistently fired thunderous deliveries that left the 24-time Grand Slam champion struggling to read the ball during the opening stages of the contest.

Djokovic eventually lost the opening set after Perricard secured a crucial break in the 11th game before comfortably serving out the set. The Serbian appeared slightly rusty throughout the early exchanges, having played very limited clay-court tennis this season due to an ongoing shoulder issue that disrupted much of his preparation for Roland Garros.

Despite the difficult start, Djokovic slowly began finding his rhythm during the second set. The Serbian created multiple break-point opportunities but initially failed to convert them as Perricard continued serving at an extremely high level. However, Djokovic’s patience and tactical intelligence eventually paid off when he finally broke serve in the final game of the set to level the match at one set apiece.

That breakthrough completely shifted the momentum of the encounter. Djokovic began reading the Frenchman’s serve more effectively and started dominating the baseline rallies with greater control and consistency. The former world number one quickly raced into a commanding lead during the third set, using his experience and movement to force errors from the young Frenchman.

As the match progressed, Perricard struggled to maintain the same level of aggression while Djokovic’s confidence continued to grow. The Serbian remained composed during the fourth set, securing another crucial break before calmly serving out the victory to book his place in the round of 64.

Following the match, Djokovic praised Perricard’s incredible serving ability, describing it as one of the toughest serves he has faced in his entire career. He admitted that reading the delivery was “practically impossible” during certain moments of the match and credited the Frenchman for pushing him to raise his level.

The victory marks Djokovic’s first clay-court win of the season and serves as an important confidence boost as he aims to capture a fourth Roland Garros title. A triumph in Paris this year would move him beyond Margaret Court and make him the outright most successful singles player in Grand Slam history.

Djokovic will next face another French opponent, Valentin Royer, as he continues his quest for more history on the famous red clay courts of Paris.
