Teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered a commanding performance to win a chaotic and rain-affected Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, securing his fourth consecutive victory and strengthening his championship lead in a fiercely contested season.

The 19-year-old Italian capitalised on a dramatic turn of events at Canadian Grand Prix, where early intra-team battles and mechanical failure reshaped the race narrative for Mercedes.

Antonelli’s primary rival and teammate George Russell had started from pole position after a strong weekend showing, including victory in the sprint race. However, his challenge collapsed mid-race due to a critical engine failure, abruptly ending a tense head-to-head battle that had defined the opening stages.

Before Russell’s retirement, the Mercedes pair had engaged in one of the most intense duels of the season, repeatedly exchanging positions across the opening 30 laps. The contest showcased both drivers pushing to the limit in wet and unpredictable conditions at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with several near-contact moments highlighting the intensity of their rivalry.

Antonelli ultimately took control after a series of decisive overtakes, while Russell’s race ended in frustration as he reacted emotionally trackside following the mechanical failure.

Behind the Mercedes drama, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton produced a strong drive to secure second place after a late-race overtake on Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, marking his best result since joining Ferrari.

Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc finished fourth, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the top five. Meanwhile, McLaren endured a difficult outing, with Lando Norris retiring due to a gearbox issue and Oscar Piastri finishing outside the points after a failed strategy gamble.

The race featured fluctuating weather conditions, with light rain influencing early strategy decisions before the track gradually dried. Early leaders briefly benefited from alternative tyre choices, but strategy miscalculations and mechanical reliability ultimately proved decisive.

Antonelli’s victory extends his championship advantage after a remarkable run of wins in China, Japan, Miami, and now Canada, positioning him as the clear title favourite as the season progresses.
