COLOMBO – Demonstrating a commitment to the wider development of Sri Lankan sport, the organizers of the Lanka Premier League have donated 1.3 Million to the Sri Lanka Netball Federation in support of netball development and women’s sports initiatives across the country.
The contribution is expected to play a vital role in strengthening grassroots programmes, improving training infrastructure, enhancing player welfare, and supporting preparations for upcoming regional and international competitions.
The official cheque presentation ceremony brought together leading figures from Sri Lanka’s sporting and cricketing communities, underlining the growing collaboration between different sports organizations in the country.
Among those present was Anil Mohan, Founder and CEO of Innovative Production Group (IPG), the official promoter of the Lanka Premier League. He was joined by Eran Wickramaratne, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee, who has been involved in several initiatives aimed at strengthening the governance and development of sport in Sri Lanka.
The donation was formally accepted by Vajira Neththikumara, President of the Sri Lanka Netball Federation, on behalf of the country’s governing body for netball.
Officials attending the event highlighted that the initiative represents an important example of how successful commercial sporting properties can contribute to the growth and sustainability of other sports. While cricket remains Sri Lanka’s most commercially successful sport, partnerships of this nature demonstrate how its influence can be used to support disciplines that require additional resources to expand and thrive.
The funds will be directed towards several key development areas, including grassroots coaching programmes, youth talent identification, training camps, athlete welfare initiatives, and the preparation of national squads for future regional tournaments.
Netball continues to be one of Sri Lanka’s most successful women’s sports, consistently producing competitive performances at international level. However, administrators have often pointed to the need for greater investment in infrastructure, coaching, and athlete development pathways to maintain that success and expand participation nationwide.
Representatives at the ceremony noted that this donation is more than a financial contribution; it is a symbol of unity within Sri Lankan sport. They stressed that long-term collaboration between sporting organizations can create stronger foundations for future generations of athletes while promoting inclusivity and equal opportunities across different disciplines.
The Lanka Premier League has grown rapidly since its inception, becoming one of the region’s leading franchise-based cricket tournaments. Beyond its impact on cricket, organisers say they are committed to supporting broader sports development initiatives that positively influence communities and athletes throughout Sri Lanka.
The donation to the Sri Lanka Netball Federation is expected to provide an important boost to ongoing development efforts and further strengthen the pathway for young netball players aspiring to represent the country at the highest level.
